Spring is definitely here and many engage in outdoor athletic activities of all sorts.
Studies now show athletes are at higher risk of being omega-3 deficient. Omega-3s are essential nutrients. They are part of the “4 prongs” every cell needs. Vitamins, minerals, protein and essential fats.
This conclusion was based on studies with Division I college football players
The average Omega-3 Index for the football players was 4.4% which is considered high risk for heart disease. Previous studies have shown that the Omega-3 Index is optimal at 8%.
Omega-3s have also been shown to enhance endurance capacity and cardiovascular function during aerobic exercise.
In this category: Omega-3s can improve cardiovascular dynamics during and after exercise as evidenced by red blood cells, endothelial function, and heart rate recovery after exercise.
The incorporation of omega-3s into skeletal muscle membranes has been found to result in changes in muscle omega-3 composition, which is essential for muscle remodeling and/or regeneration after endurance exercise.
You want to be very careful what Omega 3 product you choose. Many are not full spectrum but only two pieces of this complex. Contamination is also a big concern as many companies do not screen for more than a couple toxins.
