Our hormone profile changes as we age. We see that young, healthy people respond to stress well. When stressed there’s a spike In cortisol release but also closely following it there’s a spike in cortisol antagonist hormones to counter the cortisol in both men and women. But that release of these secondary hormones seems to sharply drop off after the age of 35 years.
In fact, as these cortisol antagonist hormones are measured with testing, they have been broken down into age groups and the ranges change because of their decline.
Not so with cortisol. It remains the same throughout life.
What does this mean? We have a natural tendency to have an imbalance leaning on the cortisol side.
And then, we make the problem worse with stressful lifestyles, caffeine and staying up late at night.
High cortisol is catabolic. It tears down muscles and organs. I’m told there is no organ that gets spared. (along with causing inflammation, leaking intestines and immune system issues.)
Bottom line: We have a natural tendency to have an imbalance of cortisol and it’s inhibitors as we age. Don’t add to this by doing things that promote high cortisol.
For those stressful times we can’t control-I have great information on what you can do, naturally, to pull cortisol down.
It’s important for us to have a long, vital, life with future generations!
